The Influence of Women in the Dental Profession

Women are becoming more predominant in business. Specifically, women are becoming a significant part of the dental industry. Since the 1980s, the number of women in the industry has continued to rise. Additionally, the past two presidents of the American Dental Association have been women.

In an article from Dental Economics, Stephanie Needham writes, “Since 2001, the number of licensed dentist who are women has grown from 26,870 to just shy of 48,000”. That is a pretty good increase for a 15 year period, and that number continues to grow today.

Needham’s  article discusses:

  • Why women fit well in dentistry
  • How the paradigm of the dental industry is shifting
  • The phenomenon is global

As the dental industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how the influence of women changes the industry. Needham writes, “It’s estimated that dentistry will become a female-dominated profession by 2020”.  Have you felt the impact of women in your dental practice?
